1. IDENITFY and ELIMINATE the TRIGGER. Common TRIGGERS of rashes can be:
   1. Overwashing of skin, washing with fragranced soaps and detergents, or using water that is too hot, too often.
   2. Topical irritants – from chemicals, detergents, or other agents  on clothing, carpet, sheets, chairs, or even pet dander. For more on identifying common topical irritants, check out our section on itchy rash TRIGGERS.
   3. Dry air – from air conditioning, a dry climate, or a sudden drop in temperature (cold air generally holds less moisture than warm air).
   4. An underlying medical condition or vitamin/mineral/essential oil deficiency. Many medical conditions can cause severe dry skin, sensitive skin, or itchy rashes. Consult your health care practitioner to rule out any serious underlying internal cause.
2. DO NOT SCRATCH – as itchy as it is, try as hard as you can not to scratch. When you scratch, hisimines go to the area which makes it even more red, irritated, and itchy, and spreads the rash. For immediate relief, gently apply a cold compress to calm down the histimines. Avoid topical steroids which may decrease itching in the short term, but in the long term they thin the skin, making it more likely to split or tear, which can cause an infection, which will make the area much more itchy and spread the rash very quickly.
3. REMOVE THE IRRITANT. If you know it is itchy because of a topical irritant, then either wipe it off gently with a cool clean wet cloth, or wash it with a very mild fragrance-free soap and rinse it thoroughly, then pat dry. While it is still damp, inspect the rash to make sure the skin is broken. If it is, then it is now a wound, and you must follow wound procedures to minimize infection.
